Navigating the Double Bind (and other gender biases)

Many women in leadership roles encounter a common dilemma. When you communicate in a direct and assertive manner, you may be viewed as competent, but not necessarily liked. Or, if you are not assertive enough, you may be liked, but perhaps considered a less competent leader. Consequentially, you may be challenged more frequently, making it difficult to led teams, departments, or organizations. In this workshop, we will explore the double bind and other gender biases associated with leadership, in addition to identifying strategies for building resilience and success.

Thursday, October 7, 2021 from 12:00 to 1:30pm
Leading with Emotionally Intelligent Communication

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a defining characteristic of great leadership and is a competency that aspiring and current women leaders can develop and leverage for building trust and growing influence. EI involves our ability to understand, manage, and express emotions while recognizing and responding appropriately to the emotional states of others. In this workshop, attendees will have an opportunity to increase one’s understanding of key principles related to EI, further develop skills in self and social awareness, and practice how to communicate in emotionally intelligent ways, the result of which can be more productive relationships, reduced conflict, and greater team performance.

The Women in Leadership Series launches in Spring 2021 and is a collaboration with Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS) Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the RBHS Office of Faculty Development, the Rutgers Office of Faculty Development, and the Rutgers Center for Organizational Leadership. The series was developed to engage and develop women faculty and staff across RBHS and Rutgers. Women faculty and staff from across the university, including participants and alumni of the Center’s leadership programs, are encouraged to attend these virtual sessions.
