On Wednesday, October 14, Dr. Andrea Conklin Bueschel, Senior Vice President for Administration and Chief of Staff to President Holloway led an interactive workshop with the 2020-2021 Rutgers Leadership Academy Fellows on the Social Value of Higher Education. She highlighted the importance of preparing academic and administrative leaders to communicate the benefits of higher education to various stakeholder groups. Bueschel then reflected on her own approach to leadership and her experience of transitioning into a new role in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. As Bueschel noted, the current challenges underscore the importance of developing comfort with ambiguity—which involve simultaneously considering stakeholder needs while preparing for an unknown future. Building clarity around one’s values and remembering one’s “True North” in relation to the institution’s mission is a key leadership competency for navigating these uncertain times.
