Ziad C. Sifri, MD, FACS, is the Wesley J. Howe Professor of Surgery, and Division Chief of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School in Newark, New Jersey. He is also Director of the Office of Global Health and Center for Global Surgery. Dr. Sifri completed his medical degree at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Following medical school, he went on to complete his residency in General Surgery at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. From there Dr. Sifri completed the Trauma and Critical Care Fellowship program at Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School (formerly UMDNJ) in Newark, New Jersey. He also completed a Trauma and Critical Care Research Fellowship. Dr. Sifri subsequently joined the Eric Muñoz Trauma Center (formerly New Jersey Trauma Center) as an Attending in 2003; and has ascended in various leadership roles throughout his career most notably as the Wesley J. Howe Professor of Surgery and Division Chief of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care. He serves as the Program Director of the Trauma and Surgical Critical Care/Acute Care Surgery Fellowship. Under Dr. Sifri’s leadership, the Fellowship has evolved into one of the most highly regarded and competitive programs in the country. Dr. Sifri is a recipient of the NJMS Excellence in Teaching Award and is a seven-time recipient of the Golden Apple Teaching Award; and is currently a 2025 nominee. He is a recipient of the Emerging Leader Award from the American College of Academic International Medicine. Dr. Sifri is Chair of the Global Surgery Committee for the Surgical University Society, and the Association of Academic Global Surgery Advisory Board. He also sits on the Board of Governors for the American College of Academic International Medicine. In 2009, he co-founded and is currently the President of International Surgical Health Initiative (ISHI), a humanitarian non-profit organization that provides free surgical care to underserved communities internationally through volunteer services provided by surgeons and other health care professionals. ISHI is a 501c3 organization based in New Jersey; and has led over 30 surgical missions resulting in nearly 3000 cost-free surgeries in Haiti, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Peru, Guatemala, and the Philippines. Dr. Sifri has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, more than 80 published abstracts and has co-authored 5 book chapters related to Acute Care Surgery and has presented at regional, national, and international levels
