Flavio Paterno, MD, MPH, FACS serves as Associate Professor of Surgery and Interim Chief of the Division of Hepatobiliary and Transplant Surgery at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. In this role, he leads a multidisciplinary team providing advanced care in liver, kidney, and hepatobiliary surgery, and oversees clinical, academic, and research operations within the division. Dr. Paterno joined Rutgers in 2018 and has played a central role in expanding the transplant and hepatobiliary programs. He previously served as Associate Director of the Division and was instrumental in developing the robotic hepatobiliary surgery program at University Hospital. His clinical and research interests focus on liver transplantation, transplant oncology, and organ preservation. His work has been widely published in leading journals and presented at national and international meetings. He holds a medical degree from the University of Palermo, Italy, and a Master of Public Health in Biostatistics from the University of Cincinnati. He completed surgical training at Yale University and a transplant surgery fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center. Dr. Paterno is an active member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, and the International Liver Transplantation Society. He also serves on multiple institutional committees and has mentored numerous medical students, residents, and fellows.
