Dr. Ruben, Distinguished Professor of Communication serves as Advisor for Strategy and Planning in the Office to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Senior University Fellow in the Rutgers Center for Organizational Leadership. Brent is also a member of faculties of the Rutgers School of Communication and Information, the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine, and the Ph.D. Program in Higher Education in the Rutgers Graduate School of Education.
Within the Center, Brent is a member of the OL leadership team and serves as liaison to the Chancellor and leadership of RBHS. He is a member of the core faculty of the Rutgers Leadership Academy, RBHS-Academic Leadership Program, PreDoctoral Leadership Development Program, and BigTen Academic Leadership Program. He also develops and presents programs and serves as a university consultant in the areas of organizational communication, assessment, leadership, strategy, and planning.
Dr. Ruben’s scholarly and professional work focuses on leadership, communication, and organizational assessment, design, and strategy. His publications include more than 60 books and 100 refereed journal articles and book chapters applying studying and applying these concepts in intercultural, health, educational, and other organizational settings. Recent books by Brent include: Visionary Leadership in Higher Education: Principles and Pragmatics of Organizational Excellence (forthcoming, 2022), A Guide for Leaders in Higher Education 2nd edition (2021 – with R. De Lisi and R. Gigliotti), Communication and Human Behavior (2020 – with L. Stewart), Leadership, Communication and Social Influence: A Theory of Resonance, Activation, and Cultivation (2019 – with R. Gigliotti), Communication and Social Influence in Personal and Professional Contexts (with R. Gigliotti and C. Goldthwaite), and Excellence in Higher Education Guide, and What Leaders Need to Know and Do: A Leadership Competencies Scorecard.
Dr. Ruben was a founder of the Department of Communication, first director of the School of Communication and Information Ph.D. Program, and founder and executive director of the Rutgers Center for Organizational Development and Leadership – now named the Center for Organizational Leadership. He was also founder and first editor of the International Communication Association, Communication Yearbook series. He was a founder and first president of the National Consortium for Continuous Improvement in Higher Education (NCCI) – now the Network for Change and Continuous Innovation). He has received national awards for his scholarly and professional achievements from the National Baldrige National Quality Foundation (Inaugural Award for Leadership Excellence in Education), National Communication Association (NCA), the National Association for College and University Business Officers (NACUBO), the Network for Change and Continuous Innovation in Higher Education (NCCI), and from Rutgers, The Daniel Gorenstein Award.
