Brent D. Ruben, PhD

Founder and Senior University Fellow, Center for Organizational Leadership

Dr. Ruben, Distinguished Professor of Communication serves as Advisor for Strategy and Planning in the Office of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and is Senior University Fellow in the Rutgers Office of Organizational Leadership. Brent is a member of the faculties of the School of Communication and Information, the Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine, and the Ph.D. Program in Higher Education in the Graduate School of Education.

Within the Center, Brent is a member of the OL leadership team and serves as liaison to the Chancellor and leadership of RBHS. He is a member of the core faculty of the Rutgers Leadership Academy, RBHS-Academic Leadership Program, PreDoctoral Leadership Development Program, other university leadership development programs, and BigTen Academic Leadership Program.

Dr. Ruben’s scholarly and professional work focuses on leadership, communication, and organizational leadership, assessment, strategy, and change. His publications include more than 60 books and 100 refereed journal articles and book chapters studying and applying these concepts in intercultural, health, educational, and other organizational settings. Recent books by Brent include: Sustainable Change in Higher Education: Leadership Principles and Practice (forthcoming, 2022), A Guide for Leaders in Higher Education 2nd edition (2021 – with R. De Lisi and R. Gigliotti), Communication and Human Behavior (2020 – with L. Stewart), Leadership, Communication, and Social Influence: A Theory of Resonance, Activation, and Cultivation (2019 – with R. Gigliotti), and Communication and Social Influence in Personal and Professional Contexts (2017 – with R. Gigliotti and C. Goldthwaite).

Dr. Ruben is a founder of the Department of Communication, first director of the School of Communication and Information Ph.D. Program, and founder and executive director of the Rutgers Center for Organizational Development and Leadership – now named the Center for Organizational Leadership. He is also founder and first editor of the International Communication Association, Communication Yearbook series, and a founder and first president of the National Consortium for Continuous Improvement in Higher Education (NCCI) – now the Network for Change and Continuous Innovation). He has received awards for his scholarly and professional achievements from the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Foundation (Inaugural Award for Leadership Excellence in Education), National Communication Association (NCA), the National Association for College and University Business Officers (NACUBO), the Network for Change and Continuous Innovation in Higher Education (NCCI), and from Rutgers, The Daniel Gorenstein Award. Brent also serves as an advisor, guest presenter, and consultant within the higher education community.
