Ethan Cowan

Ethan Cowan, MD, MS, FACEP is a Professor of Emergency Medicine at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and an Attending Physician at University Hospital in Newark. He also serves as the Associate Director for Treatment and Recovery at the Rutgers Addiction Research Center (RARC). A board-certified physician in both Emergency and Addiction Medicine, Dr. Cowan is an NIH-funded clinical investigator with expertise in opioid use disorder, HIV prevention, and emergency department-initiated interventions. He is currently principal investigator or MPI on multiple NIH grants, including trials on high-dose buprenorphine initiation and PrEP service delivery in emergency care settings. Dr. Cowan has published widely in emergency medicine, addiction, and implementation science, and has served on national committees and NIH review panels. His work bridges frontline clinical care with applied research to improve outcomes for structurally marginalized populations. He earned his BA from Washington University in St. Louis, medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and a Master of Science in Clinical Research from Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
